A Gordes Elopement: Romance in the Heart of Provence
Does eloping in the South of France seem like a dream destination? It most certainly is! One of the best places to elope in France is Gordes. Nestled in the sun-drenched hills of southern France in the Provence region called the Luberon, Gordes is a medieval hilltop village where time seems to pause. It’s here that this intimate elopement unfolded like a scene from a dream.
Surrounded by rolling lavender fields and golden stone architecture, this romantic escape felt like a quiet ode to love, simplicity, and nature. It’s so very European, and what most people dream of when they think of France or European architecture. As a professional wedding and elopement photographer in the South of France, I delight in capturing the incredible love stories of couples getting married in France.
For couples dreaming of an elegant yet relaxed celebration, a Gordes elopement offers the perfect blend of Provençal charm, sweeping views, and fragrant lavender blooms in summer. This editorial captures the magic of that experience, from quiet countryside vows to golden-hour portraits among endless purple rows.

Why Gordes is the Perfect Place to Elope in France
Gordes is one of the most iconic Luberon villages in Provence, and it’s easy to see why couples from around the world fall in love with it. With its cobblestone streets, honey-colored buildings, and panoramic views of the valley below, it feels like stepping into a romantic film. This is why I love photographing elopements here so much!

Gordes is gorgeous all year long, in fact I photographed an elopement here in November and it was stunning! Spring is nice too, but the real magic happens in June and July, when the surrounding lavender fields near Gordes burst into color.
Fields near the Abbaye de Sénanque or the Plateau de Valensole offer unforgettable backdrops for a lavender field elopement in Provence.

Intimate Moments & Lavender Dreams
Elopement Day
Richard and Katrina are a stylish, happy and loving couple living in Canada. They were looking for a low-key celebration of their love, something very personal and true to them. This couple chose to say their vows on the top of the overlook in Gordes at sunrise. The light was soft, the air was still cool after the overnight hours and the sun glistened off of the famous village. It was just the two of them, pledging their devotion to each other, a very private and personal moment, indeed!

After exchanging vows, we wandered through the stone streets of Gordes for portraits, pausing in front of shuttered windows and quiet alleyways. The sun warmed the village, casting that unmistakable Provençal glow across the scene. There are so many incredible places for wedding photos in Gordes. I was so happy that the bridge and groom had an “up for anything” spirit. This meant we were able to capture their love story in some elegant and editorial ways, including capturing their laughter, too.

After the wedding portraits in Gordes, we stopped by the La Durée macaron shop so that the happy couple could get some pretty refreshments and take a break.

Visiting Another Gorgeous Village in Provence: Roussillon
Roussillon, near Gordes, is a beautiful village with a much different vibe. All in shades of orange due to the nearby ocre mines. Plus, in my opinion, the most beautiful city hall in all of Provence! We started at the city hall, then walked up the hill past the bell tower, and to the church, which provided a stunning backdrop.

Final Stop, the Enchanting Lavender Fields of Provence
The last stop we made was to some nearby lavender fields, which were in full bloom. By this time it was quite bright, however, the background was still gorgeous as we found fields just beneath the stunning village of Lacoste. I love photographing couples in the lavender fields, the beautiful colors of the plants combined with the intoxicating scent is out-of-this-world!

Tips for Planning a Lavender Field Elopement in Provence
If you’re considering a France elopement—especially during lavender season—here are a few tips:

- Sunrise or sunset: Golden hours offer the best light and privacy
- Attire: Flowy, breathable fabrics work best in the summer heat
