Romantic Couples Photo Session in Monaco | Le Rocher & Monaco Grand Prix Harbor Portraits

There are few places in the world that feel as effortlessly cinematic as Monaco. Between the pastel-colored architecture, sweeping Mediterranean views, elegant winding streets, and iconic harbor lined with yachts, every corner feels like it belongs in a classic European film. I had the joy of photographing a romantic couples session in Monaco with Shannon and David, who live in Arizona. The entire morning unfolded like a dream as we capitalized on the beautiful light and the fact that in the morning there are fewer tourists roaming around. Monaco is one of the most visited places in the world, attracting 6.5 million visitors a year.
Shannon and David had been married a few years’ before, and this was something of a delayed honeymoon. Their French Riviera adventure would land them in Monaco for a day or two before they moved to Nice. David was especially interested in the history of car racing, which Monaco made famous.
We began our session in Le Rocher, Monaco’s historic old town perched high above the sea. Le Rocher means “the rock”. This part of Monaco was literally built on steep rock/mountain and it’s where you’ll find the heart and soul of Monaco.
Early in the morning, the light was soft, and pastel, and we practically had the whole place to ourselves, as the tourists had not arrived yet. As we wandered through the narrow stone alleyways and open plazas near the Prince’s Palace, we captured a collection of timeless, editorial-inspired portraits that perfectly reflected the elegance and romance of Monaco. I’m a huge fan of Grace Kelly, the famous Hollywood actress from Hollywood’s Golden Age, and who was for many years, the Princess of Monaco, Her Serene Highness, until her untimely, and tragic death in 1982. I love to share the history of the royal family, the Grimaldi’s and Princess Grace and her family.
What made this session even more special was the timing. Just weeks before the world-famous Formula 1 Grand Prix, the harbor below was buzzing with anticipation. Grandstands were being assembled, yachts were arriving one by one, and the city carried an unmistakable sense of excitement. After exploring Le Rocher, we descended toward the harbor where Monaco’s glamorous racing culture met the romance of the French Riviera. David really wanted to snag a photo of the race course if possible, which was a bit challenging, but we did it!
This Monaco couples session beautifully combined old-world European charm with the vibrant energy of one of the world’s most iconic destinations.
Beginning the Session in Le Rocher

We started the evening in Le Rocher, often referred to as Monaco-Ville, the oldest district in Monaco. Located atop a rocky promontory overlooking the Mediterranean, Le Rocher feels wonderfully removed from the modern luxury and fast-paced glamour often associated with Monaco. Instead, it offers quiet alleyways, warm-toned stone buildings, charming cafés, flower-covered balconies, and stunning panoramic viewpoints. It’s my favorite part of Monaco and I love wandering around here aimlessly. I’ve been here so many times, but love it so much and what was better was sharing it this time with my wonderful clients!
Almost immediately, the atmosphere invited a slower pace. Rather than rushing from location to location, we spent time wandering naturally through the streets, letting the environment guide the session. This is one of my favorite ways to photograph couples in Europe. The best images often happen organically between destinations — walking hand in hand through cobblestone streets, laughing beneath colorful shutters, or pausing in the golden light spilling into an empty alleyway. David had a very good eye, and also spotted some terrific and scenic locations for photos. I love to collaborate with my clients and make their vision come to life.
The architecture throughout Le Rocher created an incredibly romantic backdrop. Soft peach, ochre, and faded terracotta tones reflected the evening light beautifully, giving every image a warm and timeless quality. One of the things I love most about photographing in Monaco is the balance between grandeur and intimacy. Even in such a globally recognized destination, there are still so many quiet corners that feel deeply personal. It’s this side of Monaco many miss, and one that I enjoy showing.
As we explored, we stopped frequently to capture candid moments together. Some of my favorite images from the evening came from the simplest interactions — a quiet embrace beneath ivy-covered walls, windswept hair in the sea breeze, and laughter echoing through the narrow streets.
Portraits Near the Prince’s Palace
One of the highlights of photographing in Le Rocher is the area surrounding the Prince’s Palace of Monaco. The palace sits dramatically above the sea and offers some of the most iconic views in Monaco. The open square surrounding the palace feels both regal and inviting, especially in the softer evening hours once the daytime crowds begin to thin. So much has happened here, including the entrance and exit of the last royal wedding, of Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene in 2011.

We began in front of the palace, where the changing of the guard takes place all day long and is wonderful to witness. The palace, in the early morning light, looked almost pink, it was so pretty!
We photographed along the palace walls, beneath the arches, and near the overlooks facing the harbor below. From above, we could already see preparations for the Formula 1 Grand Prix beginning to take shape. Temporary structures lined the streets, cranes moved equipment into place, and yachts filled nearly every visible section of the marina.
The contrast between the calm elegance of Le Rocher and the energetic anticipation building below created such a unique atmosphere for the session. Monaco always feels glamorous, but during Grand Prix season the city becomes something entirely different. There’s an electricity in the air that transforms even ordinary moments into something cinematic.

Wandering Through Monaco’s Colorful Streets

One of the reasons Monaco photographs so beautifully is the incredible variety of textures and colors packed into such a compact space. Within only a few minutes of walking, you can move from historic stone staircases to vibrant Mediterranean facades overlooking the sea.
Throughout the session, we intentionally embraced movement and spontaneity. Instead of focusing only on posed portraits, we allowed space for natural interactions and quiet in-between moments. Walking sessions like this create images that feel alive and emotionally honest. Every couple is unique and looking for something unique to them, but I find that a combination of movement photos, walking, holding hands, as well as some more static moments, gazing into each other’s eyes, are a wonderful mix.
The colorful streets around Le Rocher were especially beautiful that morning. Window shutters painted in soft greens and blues contrasted against warm-toned buildings, while flower boxes overflowed with spring blooms. My favorites were the row of geranium pots. Truly this area reminds me of something from a movie set. Since I used to work as a tour guide at Warner Bros Studios in Burbank, CA, I’ve seen a movie set or two in my day!
As an English speaking French Riviera couples photographer, Monaco offers an incredible combination of editorial elegance and documentary-style storytelling. The city naturally lends itself to imagery that feels luxurious yet deeply romantic. Whether framed against centuries-old architecture or modern Riviera scenery, every image carries a sense of timeless sophistication.
Sessions like this also remind me why I love photographing couples in Monaco. It’s literally like being in a fairy tale as you roam these ancient streets that carry so much signficance and history.

Descending Toward the Harbor
After spending time in Le Rocher, we slowly made our way down toward the harbor. The descent itself became part of the experience. Narrow staircases opened to sweeping coastal views, and every few minutes we stopped to capture the changing scenery as Monaco unfolded beneath us.
As we approached the marina, the atmosphere shifted dramatically.
The quiet charm of the old town gave way to the unmistakable energy surrounding preparations for the Monaco Grand Prix and the series of races that happens every May and June. Crews worked throughout the harbor assembling grandstands and barriers while luxury yachts continued arriving in anticipation of race weekend. The entire city felt like it was preparing for a global celebration, which of course, it was.
Photographing near the harbor during this time of year is especially unique because Monaco exists in two worlds simultaneously. On one hand, there is the timeless Mediterranean beauty — sparkling water, historic architecture, and golden evening light. On the other, there is the modern glamour of Formula 1, luxury travel, and international excitement.
The juxtaposition created an unforgettable backdrop for the second half of the session. We also enjoyed ogling the luxury yachts and picking out our favorite from those moored there.

Monaco Grand Prix Energy

The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most iconic sporting events in the world, and witnessing the city transform ahead of the race is an experience in itself. Even days before the official event begins, the atmosphere throughout Monaco becomes electric.
Along the harbor, workers finalized viewing structures while visitors gathered to watch preparations unfold. The famous race route was beginning to take shape through the streets, weaving directly past the marina and surrounding buildings.
For the couple, this setting added an entirely different mood to their portraits. The elegance of Monaco remained, but now it was paired with anticipation, movement, and excitement. We captured images with the harbor behind them, yachts filling the marina, and glimpses of the Grand Prix setup creating subtle context throughout the background. As F1 fans, Shannon and David were capturing something super special for their vacation memories album.
One of my favorite aspects of destination couples photography on the French Riviera is documenting not only the relationship itself, but also the atmosphere of a place at a specific moment in time. This session captured Monaco exactly as it felt on this May day — romantic, glamorous, vibrant, and alive with anticipation for one of the world’s most famous events.

Editorial Romance on the Riviera
Throughout the morning, the session maintained an effortlessly editorial feel. Monaco naturally inspires that aesthetic. Between the refined architecture, dramatic coastal scenery, and luxurious atmosphere, it becomes easy to create imagery that feels both fashionable and emotionally genuine. You don’t have to be a fashionista to enjoy Monaco, but it gives you the freedom to create as you wish and reflect your personalities.
My approach to couples photography always prioritizes connection over perfection. Rather than heavily directing every movement, I focus on creating space for authentic interaction. The result is imagery that feels natural and deeply personal while still embracing the beauty of the location. For example, if it’s windy and hair is flying around, that’s part of the experience! Windy photos in my mind are very passionate and romantic. The beauty of outdoor photography is the drama it brings and the lack of perfection is exactly what’s so beautiful.
Shannon and David brought such warmth and ease to the session. They embraced every moment fully — wandering slowly through the streets, pausing to admire the harbor views, and simply enjoying the experience together. That energy translated beautifully into the final photographs. They were also a blast to chat with and I loved that the most!
It was such a wonderful morning exploring Monaco together, and will go down as one of my career highlights, it was that special!
Why Monaco is Perfect for Couples Photography

There’s a reason Monaco remains one of the most iconic destinations on the French Riviera. It offers an incredible variety of scenery within a very walkable area, making it ideal for couples sessions and destination photography.
In a single morning, couples can experience:
- Historic European streets
- Mediterranean coastal views
- Elegant architecture
- Luxury harbor scenery
- Iconic landmarks
- Romantic sunrise light
- The unmistakable Riviera atmosphere
Le Rocher in particular provides a quieter and more intimate side of Monaco that contrasts beautifully with the glamorous marina below. Combining both locations during one session creates a gallery filled with variety, depth, and storytelling.
For couples visiting Monaco during Grand Prix season, the experience becomes even more memorable. The city transforms into one of the most exciting destinations in the world, while still maintaining its timeless Riviera charm.
A Romantic Morning in Monaco

This Monaco couples session with Karina Leigh Photography was the perfect reflection of everything that makes Monaco extraordinary. From wandering the pastel streets of Le Rocher to photographing beside the harbor as Formula 1 preparations unfolded, every part of the evening felt cinematic and unforgettable.
Sessions like this are about more than beautiful locations. They are about documenting connection within meaningful experiences — preserving not only how a place looked, but how it felt to be there together.
Monaco offered the perfect backdrop for exactly that.
Between the historic charm of the old town, the elegance of the Prince’s Palace, the vibrant harbor atmosphere, and the anticipation surrounding the Grand Prix, the city created a setting that felt timeless, romantic, and entirely unique.
I left the evening feeling incredibly inspired by the beauty of the Riviera and grateful to document such a memorable experience in one of Europe’s most iconic destinations.
