Provence, a picturesque region in southeastern France, is known for its lavender fields, charming villages, and rich history. Whether you’re looking for natural beauty, cultural experiences, or culinary delights, Provence has something to offer. Here are the ten best places you must visit in Provence. As a Provence couples and wedding photographer, I’ve been to all of these places myself, and I can highly recommend them! Without further ado, here are the 10 Must See Places to Visit in Provence.

Gordes – The Hilltop Jewel and One of the Most Beautiful Villages in France
It’s absolutely true, Gordes is one of the most beautiful villages in France, perched on a hill with stunning views of the Luberon Valley. Wander through its narrow, cobbled streets, visit the historic Château de Gordes, and explore the nearby Village des Bories, an ancient settlement of stone huts.
If you like to hike, there are also some stunning nearby trails in the Luberon mountains, and this region is also a cyclist’s paradise. If you’re more into wine tasting, hot air ballooning, antiquing, and activities of that sort, you’ll find plenty of that near Gordes too. However, in my opinion, the best thing to do in Gordes is to sit on a bench overlooking the village and be swept away in the magic of this beautiful place!

Lavender Fields of Valensole – Heavenly Scents
The lavender fields of Provence, France are world-famous for their beauty. No trip to Provence is complete without experiencing the breathtaking lavender fields in Provence, the most famous being those outside the village of Valensole. From mid-June to late July, the fields burst into vibrant purple hues, creating a postcard-perfect landscape.
Visit early in the morning or at sunset for the most stunning views and fewer crowds. If you come to Provence at other times of the year, the lavender is not blooming yet, but there are still other incredible things to see.
The scent in the lavender fields is intoxicating, and it also draws a lot of bees. If you’re afraid of bees, no worries, they are busy pollinating and keep to themselves. Valensole is a bit of a drive from some of the main towns in Provence, so if it’s out of your way, you can also visit some fields closer to Gordes and near the town of Bonnieux.

Avignon – The City of Popes
Avignon is steeped in history, best known for the impressive Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes), a UNESCO World Heritage site. This was where the popes lived before the Vatican in Italy and it’s an incredibly interesting and inspiring palace to visit.
You can also walk along the famous Pont d’Avignon, explore the charming old town, and indulge in delicious Provençal cuisine at one of the local restaurants. Avignon is also famous for its tiny theaters, and each summer hosts one of the world’s most popular theater festivals called the Festival d’Avignon throughout the month of July.
Avignon is also special because it has its original ramparts, circling the old town, and is really impressive to see.

Les Baux-de-Provence – A Medieval Marvel on a Rock
This town is close to my heart, because it’s close to home and a place I visit over and over. This striking medieval village is perched on a rocky outcrop and offers panoramic views of the Alpilles Mountains.
Visit the Château des Baux ruins, explore the charming streets filled with artisan shops, and experience the immersive Carrières de Lumières, an extraordinary digital art exhibition inside an old quarry. The Carriéres makes you feel like you’re actually in the painting, it’s such a powerful sensory experience and so much fun!
You’ll also see around Les Baux hiking trails, with beautiful vistas, and some wonderful places to stay like the Baumaniere.

Cassis & Calanques National Park – Coastal Beauty
When you think of Provence, you probably don’t think about the sea! But you’re never too far from the Mediterranean Sea in Provence. For stunning coastal scenery, head to Cassis and the Calanques National Park.
Cassis is a delightful village just 20 minutes east of Marseille, the second largest city in France, and “capital” of the Provence region. Take a boat tour to see the breathtaking limestone cliffs and turquoise waters of the Calanques, or hike along the trails for spectacular views.
Enjoy fresh seafood in Cassis’ charming harbor after a day of adventure. Cassis is one of those places where the sun always shines, everyone is happy, and walking around eating ice cream cones. It’s the perfect place for a half-day trip!

Roussillon – The Ochre Wonderland
Another one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages, Roussillon is a unique village famous for its striking ochre cliffs and buildings in shades of red, orange, and yellow. Walk the Ochre Trail (Sentier des Ocres) for a surreal experience through the colorful landscape.
It looks like another world! Just maybe don’t wear white shoes if you’d like to keep them clean. When you’re done walking the trail, head into the cute-as-can-be village where you’ll see the most charming city hall you’ve ever seen!
All in orange, it’s like something out of a fairytale. Pass through the winding streets to the top of the hill for stunning views of the countryside surrounding Roussillon.

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence – Van Gogh’s Hospital
This charming town is known for its connection to Vincent van Gogh, who painted many of his masterpieces here. Visit the Saint-Paul de Mausole asylum where he stayed, explore the local markets, and see the nearby Roman ruins of Glanum. I love the Roman ruins, personally, you feel like you could live in Roman times! Additionally, there are some incredible trails to hike nearby, the highest point in the Alpilles mountains is here and affords stunning views over the entire area. When you’re done hiking, come on back into town and enjoy a snack and a drink at one of the cute cafés in town. You’re also a short drive from Les-Baux-de-Provence.

Aix-en-Provence – The City of Fountains
This town is magnificent, especially if you love fountains! Aix-en-Provence is an elegant, vibrant city in Provence known for its ornate architecture, lively markets, and artistic heritage. Walk along Cours Mirabeau, visit the Atelier Cézanne, and enjoy the city’s many fountains and charming cafés. My favorite fountain is the dolphin fountain, it’s small and unassuming, but so pretty. If you love markets, you’ll find many markets in Aix throughout the week, including food, clothing and souvenirs. Aix is a very lively Provençal town, and very grand and very, very pretty!

Arles – The Most Amazing Roman Town in Provence
The town is near to my heart because I live here! There’s so much I’ve love to tell you about Arles!
- Roman Heritage: Founded during Roman times, Arles is famous for its exceptionally well-preserved Roman monuments, including the impressive Arles Amphitheatre, the Roman Theatre, and the ancient Alyscamps necropolis. The whole town is on the UNESCO World Heritage sites, and you can buy one ticket and see many of the old Roman artifacts.
- Vincent van Gogh: Arles played a key role in inspiring the work of the renowned painter Vincent van Gogh. The unique quality of light and color in the region influenced many of his most famous paintings including Terrasse du café le soir (terrace of the cafe in the evening). You can literally walk in the footsteps of Van Gogh!
- Rencontres d’Arles: Arles is the capital of photography in France and celebrates with the annual photography festival, Rencontres d’Arles, which attracts artists and visitors from around the globe, contributing to a lively contemporary cultural scene. In addition to photography exhibits, which are moving and interesting from photographers worldwide, you’ll find video, multimedia and music, too!

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie – Incredibly Beautiful
Nestled between cliffs, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is one of the most picturesque villages in France (and yes, on the list of the most beautiful in France). Known for its pottery and stunning scenery, it’s also the gateway to the breathtaking Gorges du Verdon, France’s answer to the Grand Canyon. The first time I saw Moustiers I couldn’t believe it was real! I never wanted to leave, it is so incredibly pretty and a great place to spend a half day and perfect if you’re planning to visit the lavender fields of Valensole.
