The Ultimate Guide To Planning a Surprise Proposal in Provence!

Provence Surprise Proposal

Hi, I'm Karina, a professional wedding & couples photographer in France. I'm so glad you're here.

When you are looking for a picture-perfect place to pop the question, you really can’t do any better than Provence, France. Yes, of course, you have the classic lavender fields, but there are also historic towns, ancient buildings, and lush olive groves. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find a spot that lacks that je ne sais quoi for an unforgettable engagement. If you have been considering a proposal in Provence, I am here to help! As an English-speaking American proposal photographer in Provence, I adore working with couples to have their perfect experience. Here’s all you need to know.

Things to Consider for Your Proposal In Provence

When to Propose in Provence

The first thing you need to decide is where you want to stage your proposal in Provence. Provence is typically mild in the winter with very hot summers. This can make the spring or the fall a bit more appealing, especially because you will miss the summer crowds. That being said, the lavender fields are not available year-round. In fact, there’s a very short window where you can see them in all their splendor.

If you are planning your proposal for this spot, I would say to plan around early July. During this season, they should be at their peak, with purple blossoms stretching on and on. Also, be sure to keep an eye on the forecast months before. It can be hard to know exactly when they are going to bloom, and it can change per year. I always tell my clients to expect July but to be very flexible just in case.

Another note: expect to see crowds while it’s happening. Unfortunately, this is a global destination, and there’s just no way to fully avoid them. If you are up for an early session, you should be able to get a bit more privacy. Plus, the sunrises in Provence are absolutely unforgettable!

Most couples have a vacation planned to Provence, and therefore the timing isn’t as simple, as you want to make your engagement happen during this time. No worries, because Provence is beautiful year-round and even though it gets hot in summer, there are ways to avoid the heat.

A Backup Plan for Weather

Unlike other spots in France, Provence doesn’t get very rainy which is good for a proposal. Most of the bad weather happens in late fall, around October and November. Weather, however, is a fickle thing, and you can never fully know what to expect. Have a backup spot planned just in case those raindrops do show up on the forecast. If you want to brave the weather, be sure to pack a stylish umbrella (clear is best!) so you can stay dry without dragging down your pics. Also, I would suggest planning your proposal toward the beginning of the trip. You can always push it back as needed, plus you won’t have to spend the entire time thinking about it and it will be easier for your nerves!

The Ring

Now comes the tricky part: the ring! It’s just a matter of getting it to Provence completely undetected by your partner before the proposal. Do not put it in a checked bag because you always risk it getting lost on the way. Also, don’t keep it on your person. You’re going to have to go through metal detectors at the airport, and the last thing you want is to start setting off alarms and have it get pulled out in front of your partner! Rather, put it in a discreet travel bag inside your carry-on. That way, it’s always close but never exposed. Oh, and don’t skip the traveler’s insurance on the ring!

Hiring an Amazing Provence Proposal Photographer

Trust me, this is a moment you are going to want to remember for years and years. Even if it’s not important for you, it more than likely will be important for your partner. Before your trip, book a Provence proposal photographer who knows the area and understands how to capture the moment. Someone like me! I love working with clients to plan that perfect proposal. Typically, I’ll be waiting at that spot like a tourist, just snapping pics, blending in with the crowd, I’m not even a factor, your partner will have no idea who I am.

After we make eye contact, you can drop to one knee and ask your partner to marry you. I’ll capture every beautiful moment. After this, we can capture the joy of your engagement with a mini-engagement session in the nearby area. Your partner is going to appreciate this little detail for years!

What Does a Proposal Photographer Cost in Provence?

A really good proposal photographer in Provence has more than photography skills. A professional surprise proposal photographer in Provence will understand timing and logistics, know of wonderful outdoor scenic locations for your engagement, and be there to answer any questions you may have so you feel comfortable and confident. Of course, they’ll also be able to capture incredible photos of your special day and ensure your partner feels comfortable, too. These are memories you’ll want to save forever. Every photographer has a different rate, most English speaking photography professionals in Provence range from around 500-700€, which typically includes planning. As an English speaking surprise proposal and engagement photographer, my rate starts at 675€ and you can read more about my services here >> https://karinaleigh.com/provence-france-surprise-proposals

Do You Need a “Full Set Up”?

Each client has a vision of how they’d like their surprise proposal to look and feel. For some, the surprise is a surprise when the proposal is natural and spontaneous. For example, you’re on a walk or admiring a beautiful viewpoint, and you ask your partner then. This is a real surprise because it’s very spontaneous.

Other clients wish for a more elaborate set up, with candles, rose petals, a violinist, flowers, maybe a flower arch or Marry Me Sign. These more elaborate set ups are best in private locations like hotels or restaurants, and not really feasible in outdoor locations in Provence due to the space or that the outdoor locations are not private and setups cannot be placed in public spaces.

Honestly, it’s a bit too much usually, because the beauty surrounding you is natural and the best set up you could hope to have. If you still want a more traditional set up with all the bells and whistles, it’s best to consult a wedding planner who can plan the entire proposal for you. If it’s just a bouquet of flowers or bottle of champagne, that’s completely doable, even if you don’t want a more elaborate set up.

Gorgeous Spots for Your Proposal in Provence

So, where should you set your proposal in Provence? Here are just a few of my favorite spots:

The Lavender Fields

This is the most iconic place in all of Provence! You can stand in the row next to your partner. It’s perfect framing amidst the most picturesque spot in the entire city! Just be sure to expect lots and lots of bees. Please note, lavender does not bloom all year long, only for a few short weeks at the end of June into early July.

Olive Groves

I love the olive groves because they put you out in the middle of nature without ever taking you far from town. It’s the best way to get your nature-filled engagement before heading out to get engagement pics in the city. Olive groves are found all over Provence, but my favorites are near Les Baux-de-Provence. Les Baux is one of France’s most beautiful villages and a jewel in Provence. You’ll want to visit here anyway, so why not propose while you’re there?

Gordes

I really cannot say enough good things about Gordes. This town has literally been named one of the most beautiful villages in France, and given that I’ve visited many of the most beautiful villages in France, I can attest that it’s true. It features stone lookouts that open up over the hills as well as stone streets far away from the hustle and bustle of tourists. If you do decide to use this spot, I highly suggest staying at La Bastide, a hotel with top-notch accommodations! The views in Gordes are incredible, but timing is everything. If you come after 9:00 in the morning, you’ll have hordes of tourists to contend with in the summer, so earlier is better, if you can, and also be open to various viewpoints.

Arles Amphitheatre

Let me warn you right now, the Arles Amphitheatre tends to be a spot where there are constantly tons of tourists. This ancient Roman structure still hosts events and serves as a significant piece of history. That said, the stairs leading up to the building are such a divine spot to pop the question. There’s no Provence proposal backdrop quite like it! Again, morning is best if you can to avoid the crowds.

Historic Arles

If you want the history of Arles without the traffic of the amphitheater, Historic Arles is your spot. There are so many scenic places, including colorful buildings and quiet terraces. The fountain at the center of the area is also pretty fantastic! This is my client who proposed in one of the pretty and colorful squares of Arles, which are everywhere.

The Rhone River

If you want something totally quiet, The Rhone might be best. As you walk along the river, you will have all of Arles (and the amphitheater!) in the backdrop. There is also a fantastic bridge just outside of Arles if you’re up for a bit of a walk, which provides some privacy.

Vineyard

If privacy is super important, then you may be interested in proposing at many of the local vineyards in Provence. Usually it includes a tour of the vines, a wine tasting and then your proposal. A photographer isn’t normally included in the package, so be sure to reach out to me to capture your photographing memories!
