Elopements are already extremely romantic. This is your chance to ditch the tired traditions and forge a future with the one you love the most. You get to call the shots and find all the brilliant little touches that are so meaningful to your love story. It’s also an opportunity to travel across the globe and find a place where you’ve never been before.

As an American, English speaking elopement photographer in France, I have been lucky enough to capture weddings all around the country, and one of my favorite places remains the French Riviera. This area combines historic buildings with jaw-dropping nature to create a romantic setting worthy of your wedding. The Ultimate Guide To Planning A French Riviera Elopement

When You Should Elope in The French Riviera & How to Pick Your Date

When will you visit the French Riviera? Most couples are coming to France on vacation and their wedding day will fit in with their other plans, and of course, the honeymoon.

Which season you choose to visit is highly personal, based on your personal preferences for weather, tolerance for tourist crowds, and your own schedules.

Here are some ideas season by season, that can help you determine which season you’d prefer.

Winter: Winter on the French Riviera is often chilly and sunny, with periods of rain and clouds. I’ve photographed couples on chilly but sunny days in February and March and it was beautiful, so it all depends on your schedule. If you don’t mind bundling up a bit or having a rainy day plan, this time of year can actually be very peaceful and calm. Also, there are some fun events on the Riviera in winter, such as Nice Carnaval, which is an incredible celebration with floats and entertainment not to be missed!

Spring: Spring in the French Riviera is lovely. The months of April and May are glorious, with warm, sunny days and few tourists. Many of the beach clubs don’t open until the end of April or into May, so if that’s important you may want to push your elopement into the summer months, but spring is really beautiful on the French Riviera. You may want to try to avoid the weekends of the Grand Prix in Monaco as the area tends to get very busy, or maybe you’re attending yourselves, in which case, it’s perfect!

Summer: If you like warm weather, you are going to love summer on the French Riviera! Temps can reach up to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, with peak temperatures in August. Couples who choose to elope during this season prefer the end of August through all of September. The buzz of the summer is still present, but the temps are much more tolerable. In the heart of the summer you have humidity to deal with and a lot of crowds, but it’s summer, and honestly, still quite magical. It’s also ideal if you’d love to lay on a chair on the beach and read a great summer novel.

Autumn: Autumn on the French Riviera is lovely and calm, most of the tourists have gone home so you feel almost like you have the place to yourselves. The temperatures are mild, with the occasional rainy day, but also lots of sun. If you enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, this season is ideal. October is one of my favorite months of the year on the French Riviera.

Once you pick the season that you love best, you can begin your planning. This is where I come in too, as a professional elopement photographer on the French Riviera, I not only photograph you, but help you with all of the planning too, so that your day is stress-free and memorable!

French Riviera Elopement Locations

The cities across the French Riviera feel as though they have come straight from a fairytale. When you are planning your elopement, you will get the chance to choose between secluded gardens and historic castles extravagant enough to make Cinderella blush! But if you prefer a low-key elopement, there are many dramatic and beautiful public locations as well. Some of the best spots include:

  • Château de la Napoule: This historic castle has everything you need for a romantic weekend. The balcony along the exterior overlooks the water of the French Riviera. For your venue, you can choose from lush green gardens and decks nestled alongside the restored stone.
  • Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild: this blush-pink mansion is rich with colorful gardens, towering palm trees, and a terrace that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. It will serve as a gorgeous backdrop throughout your pics!
  • Bastide du Roy: This manor brings you all the classic charm of the French Riviera. The gardens are some of my favorites, and over 350 olive trees provide shade for your ceremony.
  • Château de Robernier: This Provence castle has been recently restored to its former beauty, giving you an enchanted castle perfect for exchanging vows. With this venue, you can make your ceremony as subdued or lavish as you’d like!
  • Outdoors Along the Coast: Most couples love the simplicity of an outdoor elopement, many are drawn to the beautiful blue water, and there are many towns along the Riviera with beautiful sea views, such as Antibes and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat for a perfect elopement. You do not need to rent out a lavish location for your elopement, if a low-key event is what you’re going for, there are plenty of public spots to celebrate your love story.

Getting Married Legally on the French Riviera

Many of the American or Canadian couples who choose to have a French Riviera elopement choose to have a symbolic ceremony in France.

The reason for this is pretty simple. France requires at least one person in the relationship to have resided in France for at least 30 days. This rule can vary depending on the place. Since that’s often not practical, you can take care of the legal part at home before or after you visit the French Riviera.

Your elopement on the French Riviera will be symbolic, and oh-so-special! It’s a day you’ll never forget!

What to Wear to Your Elopement

Your wedding attire should reflect your personal style while also being practical for the season and the locations you’ve chosen. If you’re eloping during the warmer months, lightweight fabrics like chiffon, crepe, silk, or tulle will keep you comfortable while allowing for beautiful movement in your photographs. For autumn or winter elopements, consider adding a stylish coat, wrap, cape, or tailored jacket to stay warm without sacrificing elegance.

When choosing your wedding dress, I always recommend something that allows you to move comfortably. Flowing gowns photograph beautifully, catch the breeze in all the right ways, and make walking between locations much easier. For grooms, lightweight, well-tailored suits are ideal, especially during the warmer months on the French Riviera, where temperatures can climb quickly and humidity can get high.

One of the most overlooked details is footwear. While beautiful shoes complete your wedding look, comfort is just as important. Some of the most breathtaking coastal locations feature rocky paths or uneven terrain. Choosing shoes you can comfortably walk in—or bringing a second pair for moving between locations—will make your elopement day far more enjoyable and ensure you can fully focus on each other rather than your feet.

How Much Does An Elopement Cost?

While elopements in general tend to be less expensive than a traditional wedding back home, there are a number of things you will need to budget. This will vary by couple and what your dream is for your big day.

  • Ceremony Location: Most couples who love eloping on the French Riviera love the great outdoors, and prefer a sea view when they say their vows. There are beautiful locations all along the French Riviera, particularly around the cities of Antibes and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. Most of these views do not require permits and are free, but ceremonies are best in the morning before too many tourists are out and about. As they are public spots, it’s also important that you have some flexibility as these locations cannot be reserved.
  • Accommodation: You’ll want a nice place to stay, because not only will your accommodation serve as your getting ready spot, but it will also be a honeymoon destination after your elopement. Budgets for accommodations vary widely, but you could expect to pay between 250€ a night and upwards.
  • Food: When you are in the culinary destination of the world, you definitely need to feast! There are wonderful restaurants where you can celebrate after your elopement. Budget between 200€ and 400€ for fine dining.
  • Ceremony: A celebrant or officiant will craft a personal and meaningful ceremony. You can expect to pay between 900€ and 1500€ for a celebrant or officiant. Some couples, however, love to read their vows to each other without a celebrant present. You can even find beautiful vow booklets that you can customize on sites like Etsy.
  • Music: You can hire a violinist to play some of your most meaningful songs, or bring along a Bluetooth speaker and program some of your favorite songs into it. Budget 400€ to 600€ for a violinist.
  • Flowers: Flowers are essential for a wedding! Depending on the size of bouquet you’d like and the type of flowers, budget 150€ to 300€ for your floral bouquet.

Hiring a French Riviera Elopement Photographer

I may be biased as an English speaking professional wedding photographer on the French Riviera, but I think photography is the most important investment you can make for your elopement. Not only do photographers capture all the special moments of your wedding day, but they will serve as a guide and valuable local resource. Look for a photographer who has a style you like — whether they photograph darker and moodier or lighter and brighter as is my style, it’s important you find a photographer that captures your style as well as the beauty of the French Riviera.

As an American English speaking French Riviera elopement photographer, I am deeply passionate about helping couples see the best side of my adopted country. I offer customized packages that include half or full-day photography, gorgeous high-resolution digital images, recommendations to trusted vendors, and helping you plan your big day. Not only do I want to make sure you can have gorgeous portraits showing off your celebration on the Riviera, but I also want to help your day feel absolutely stress free, fun and amazing!
