I have to say, this was one of the most beautiful elopements I’ve ever photographed, and it happened under the most unusual and romantic circumstances.
When the groom first reached out to me, he had a clear vision: his partner’s ultimate dream was an intimate, romantic wedding overseas surrounded by their closest loved ones. He wanted to make that dream a reality—and he had an incredible plan to pull it off.
As they were traveling to France for vacation, he decided he wanted to propose in Bordeaux at a vineyard. Then, just a few days later, they’d be married in the beach in Saint-Tropez. He would take care of everything–and as close family and friends were in on it, they all worked together to pull off the surprise.
For me as an English speaking wedding photographer on the French Riviera, the plan at first felt a bit unconventional and even worrisome. Not that she would say no to the proposal, or even to the surprise elopement, but would she feel left out of the process?
How would she react? Would she accept me as her wedding photographer? Yet, I trusted my client so implicity that he knew what his partner desired, and this was also fun to be honest, to be in on a big surprise that would delight someone, always a great feeling!

After popping the question among the vineyards of Bordeaux and getting a resounding yes, the groom revealed the ultimate surprise: they were heading straight to the French Riviera to get married—and their closest family and friends were already waiting to celebrate with them.
The group gathered at Hotel Ventura, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, a stylish property tucked along the Chemin des Amoureux in central Saint-Tropez. Steps away from Place des Lices and the village’s vibrant energy, the hotel provided a chic, sun-drenched backdrop for their wedding morning preparations.
Rather than a rigid traditional timeline, the couple embraced a spontaneous, deeply personal approach to their day:
- The Market Bouquet: Early in the morning, the couple walked through the local Saint-Tropez market with their celebrant, hand-selecting fresh, vibrant blooms to craft a custom wedding bouquet full of authentic Riviera charm. This was a special, personal touch and allowed the bride-to-be to feel part of the process, even though it had been a surprise.
- The Wardrobe Reveal: In true best-friend fashion, the maid of honor surprised the bride with a curated selection of stunning wedding gowns and shoes to choose from right in their suite, making the dress selection an unforgettable experience in itself.
- The Final Touches: A local hair and makeup artist arrived at an Airbnb that was rented (to keep her look a surprise from the groom until the First Look) to complete the bridal look, leaving the bride glowing and ready for a romantic seaside ceremony. She looked simply radiant!

Pop the Champagne & A Sweet First Look in Saint-Tropez
When I arrived at the Airbnb to begin capturing the preparations, the energy in the room was electric. The bride was completely relaxed, surrounded by her inner circle, sipping champagne, and playing a favorite playlist while putting the finishing touches on her bridal look. Capturing these candid, joyous moments before a ceremony is always a favorite part of my work as a French Riviera wedding photographer—it sets the tone for a day built around celebration rather than stress.
Once dressed and ready, it was time for one of the most anticipated moments of the day: the First Look.
We wandered into the heart of Saint-Tropez, heading toward a sun-lit, picturesque town square surrounded by classic Mediterranean architecture and shaded pastel pastel walls. The groom waited patiently, taking in the quiet anticipation of the moment. The bride walked up behind him, tapped him gently on the shoulder, and he turned to see his bride for the first time in her gown. Their tearful, laughing embrace in the middle of Saint-Tropez was pure magic—an intimate, quiet moment captured right in the middle of the iconic Riviera.
Golden Wedding Portraits Through the Streets of Saint-Tropez
Following their emotional First Look, we took an hour to explore the heart of Saint-Tropez before the ceremony began. Walking through the quiet cobblestone streets gave the couple a peaceful, intimate interlude to connect, take in the moment, and simply enjoy being together on their wedding day.
Saint-Tropez provides an unbeatable backdrop for French Riviera wedding photography. We wandered past iconic pastel facades, ochre shuttered windows, and coastal viewpoints overlooking the turquoise waters of the bay. The warm August sunlight reflecting off the historic architecture made every scene feel straight out of a classic Riviera dream.
Taking portrait time before the ceremony gave the couple a chance to soak in every emotion without feeling rushed. By the time we finished our walk along the water, they were completely relaxed, glowing, and ready to meet their waiting family and friends on the beach to exchange their vows.
Seaside Vows on the Legendary Sands of Pampelonne
Following their intimate French Riviera bridal portrait session, everyone gathered at the iconic beaches of Pampelonne—a coastal paradise famous for its golden sand and crystal-clear waters just outside Saint-Tropez.
The groom arrived first, greeting their intimate circle of family and friends as they gathered along the shoreline. The atmosphere was filled with warm anticipation as guests took in the gentle sea breeze and crashing waves. Being that it was August, yes, it was quite hot and humid, but everyone took it in stride.
The ceremony began with a beautiful, deeply emotional entrance as the bride walked down the beach escorted by both her father and stepfather. Before exchanging their vows, the couple took a quiet moment to honor loved ones who could not be there with them, lighting a ceremonial candle in their memory. It was a heartfelt, grounding tradition that brought an incredible depth of connection to their seaside wedding.
Exchanging Vows on the Sand & Celebrating on the Ramatuelle Coast
As the celebrant began the ceremony, the emotion along the shore was palpable. The bride’s mother shared a heartfelt reading, bringing joyful tears to everyone gathered on the sand. Surrounded by the sound of the Mediterranean waves, the couple exchanged their handmade vows and rings.
To honor heritage and new beginnings, they incorporated the meaningful African tradition of jumping the broom. Sweeping away the past and leaping together into their future as husband and wife drew cheers and happy tears from their loved ones.
After being pronounced married, the celebration kicked off right on the beach. Guests toasted the newlyweds with French champagne, fresh summer fruits, and classic butter croissants.
While family and friends enjoyed the seaside spread, we captured timeless family portraits on the shore, followed by romantic post-ceremony bridal session, very briefly on the beach.
Splashing into Married Life & Celebrating at Saint-Tropez’s Most Famous Beach Club
After wrapping up family portraits and beachside toasts, it was time to celebrate Riviera-style. The group headed to Le Club 55, the legendary Ramatuelle beach club famed for its relaxed elegance and storied history on Pampelonne Beach.
Before sitting down to a feast of fresh Mediterranean dishes and chilled rosé, the newlyweds decided to make an unforgettable splash. Slipping out of their wedding attire and into their swimsuits, they dove right into the turquoise waves of the sea to celebrate their first moments as husband and wife.
Capturing their laughter and pure joy as they frolicked in the clear Mediterranean water was the ultimate finale to an incredible morning. Leaving them to enjoy a sun-drenched lunch surrounded by their closest friends and family was the perfect end to a dream assignment as a French Riviera wedding photographer.
