When couples tell friends and family they are planning to elope in the “South of France,” they are often picturing one of two distinct aesthetic worlds: the rustic, sun-drenched countryside of inland Provence, or the high-fashion, coastal cliffside luxury of the French Riviera (Côte d’Azur).
While both regions offer incredible wine, world-class gastronomy, and Mediterranean sunshine, their visual backdrops and overall atmospheres are fundamentally different. As an English speaking wedding and elopement photographer serving both Provence and the French Riviera, I believe I can offer a world of value in helping prospective couples decide which location best suits their vibe.
Here is a side-by-side comparison to help you discover which region aligns best with your wedding vision.

Aesthetic & Landscape Comparison

Inland Provence: Rustic Earth Tones & Country Romance
Inland Provence is defined by soft, organic textures and warm sunlight filtering through ancient olive trees. Ceremonies here take place with incredible village views, in olive groves, near vineyards or with mountain views.
- Key Locations: Gordes, Ménerbes, Roussillon, and the Valensole Plateau for lavender (in season).
- The Look: Flowy gowns, wild organic florals, warm terracottas, sage greens, and honey-colored stone backgrounds.
- The Atmosphere: Peaceful, grounded, and deeply connected to nature and slow living, great wine and lots of sunshine.

French Riviera: High-Fashion Drama & Coastal Glamour
The French Riviera is defined by bold color contrasts: limestone cliffs dropping into deep turquoise water, terracotta roofs against bright blue skies, and grand Belle Époque architecture.
- Key Locations: Cap d’Antibes, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Nice and Saint-Tropez.
- The Look: Tailored suits, sleek modern gowns, dramatic long veils, statement sunglasses, and vibrant coastal color palettes like deep blues.
- The Atmosphere: Vibrant, luxurious, exclusive, and undeniably romantic.

2. Logistics & Getting Around
Travel Hubs & Airport Access
- French Riviera: Exceptionally convenient for international travelers. Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) is located right on the coast, putting you within a 30 to 45-minute drive of Antibes, Cap Ferrat and is super close to Nice, which is a beautiful wedding or elopement location in its own rite.
- Provence: Highly accessible via Marseille Provence Airport (MRS) or the high-speed TGV train from Paris directly into Avignon or Aix-en-Provence. From there, a car rental is necessary to access the most beautiful spots of Provence, usually a 45-minute to 2-hour drive, depending on where you’re staying.
Driving & Transit Considerations
- French Riviera: Connecting towns along the coast is simple via the TER regional train line. However, driving during peak July and August traffic along the coastal corniche roads requires careful time buffers as the trains are very crowded. However, you could also hire a private driver.
- Provence: Renting a car is almost essential to explore the quiet countryside, winding backroads, and hilltop villages spread across the Luberon valley and Alpilles regions, the two most desirable locations in Provence.

3. Cost & Budget Considerations
Both regions offer options ranging from simple, budget-conscious ceremonies to ultra-luxury privatizations, but their major expense categories differ:
- Provence: There are few large hotel chains in Provence. Instead, you can rent a villa, or Airbnb, stay in a luxury spa, or old stone home. Also there will be the expense of hiring a private driver or a rental car. There are some incredible restaurants in Provence, so you’ll want to budget for a celebratory dinner.
- French Riviera: Budgets tend to center around high-end photography coverage, private boat charters, luxury boutique hotel stays, and Michelin-star celebratory dinners overlooking the Mediterranean. But it depends on each couple, because some couples aren’t looking for ultra luxury, but something beautiful, comfortable and memorable, and there are tons of choices from hotel chains to private villas to Airbnb’s to rent.

How to Decide: Which Region Belongs in Your Story?
Choose Inland Provence If:
- You feel inspired by lavender fields, quiet vineyards, stunning cliffside medieval towns, a slow pace under the soft sun.
- You want a slow-paced, grounded countryside experience where you can sip local wine under shade trees.
- You prefer warm earth tones and organic, garden-style florals and a really laid back atmosphere.
Choose the French Riviera If:
- You dream of exchanging vows overlooking the sea with waves crashing on limestone rocks below.
- You want an editorial, high-fashion aesthetic featuring iconic historic villas and coastal vistas.
- You want to combine your ceremony with a private boat charter, coastal cliff walks, and seaside fine dining.

Can’t Decide? Combine Both!
Because Provence and the French Riviera sit side by side in the South of France, many couples choose to enjoy the best of both worlds. You can easily begin your trip with a quiet countryside retreat in Provence, then take a scenic two-hour drive down to the coast for your French Riviera elopement and honeymoon.
